Menzies Aviation Promotes Airport Safety

Our Edinburgh Airport team partners with Jet2 for safety event

Last week, Menzies Aviation took part in the Edinburgh Airport (EDI) Annual Safety Week for the 6th consecutive year, choosing to highlight the issue of the ‘Cost of Accidents’. 

As part of the event, the EDI team collaborated with Jet2 for the event, as part of the “One team, One goal” partnership.

The team staged an aircraft turnaround to demonstrate how aircraft damage and personal injury can be caused. Using an aircraft provided by the airline and equipment provided by Menzies Aviation, representatives from both companies led groups on a guided tour of turnaround risk.

Employees throughout the airport community took part, including service providers, airlines and airport authority, and had the opportunity to win holiday tickets donated by the airline if they answered a number of questions correctly – the answers to each were included within the tour commentary ensuring it held their attention for the full duration as well as being informative.

Gordon Whitelaw, Ground Safety Manager for Jet2, said “We would like to congratulate and thank the EDI team for their part in making the event a huge success and in promoting the absolute importance of ground safety as part of the Menzies Aviation brand.

“Attendees found the guided tours informative and felt they had learned from the experience.

“The event highlighted the success of the safety plan ‘One Team, one goal’ introduced in June this year and the continual safety improvements in EDI and across the network where we have a partnership.”

Vanessa Veall appointed as the new Cargo Manager for South Africa & Namibia

Effective from the 1 October 2016, Vanessa Veall take up her new position as Cargo Manager South Africa & Namibia reporting to Ian van Rooyen, VP Operations Southern Africa.

Vanessa has been with Menzies Aviation since our inception at Johannesburg cargo in 2008.

Having started as an imports controller, Vanessa was quickly promoted to the position of Customer Service and Claims Duty Manager, with the main focus of implementing and developing a team that would be responsible for a high standard of communication with our stakeholders. Vanessa has a strong customs and administration background which she used to strengthen relationships with regulatory authorities and improve operational standards to the quality expected of Menzies.

In 2015 Vanessa was promoted to Operations Support Manager, which included the role of Key Account Manager to one of our biggest customer airlines. Vanessa brought huge improvements to our operational efficiencies during this time, whilst also assisting with standardising many of our cargo procedures during a year of contract and infrastructure growth for cargo, both in South Africa and Namibia.

Ian van Rooyen said “Vanessa is an integral part of the cargo team and has an in-depth knowledge of our cargo system, the commercial aspects of the business and the needs of our customers. Vanessa has also proven to be good leader and an excellent Manager over the years with a rare dedication to the smooth running of the Menzies cargo operation.
